Lowland forest in Sumatra is under considerable threat due to clearance for agricultural expansion, especially oil palm. However, as the native range is uncertain, it is hard to determine the impact of any of the threats to this species.

The species occurs in a number of protected areas across its range, but it may have been introduced to a number of these. There are a large number of collections of this species in ex situ cultivation (BGCI 2018).

Further genetic research is required to see if the native part of its range can be determined, and if so, surveys will be required to determine the size and status of the population.
