The population of this species is believed to be large. Mamut et al. (2014a) reported field work conducted in a large population with thousands of individuals located in the Gurbantunggut Desert in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwestern China. Although there are some threats to the habitat of this species it is suspected that the population is relatively stable, particularly as it is able to colonize shifting sand (Ma et al. 2008) and large areas of sand dune habitat remain.

In the last fifty years road building, oil extraction, paving and reservoir-aqueduct construction have posed threats to the desert vegetation in the Gurbantunggut Desert in Xinjiang (Ma et al. 2008). Irrigation also allows the expansion of agriculture into former desert areas which may impact upon the habitat of this species.

This plant has been collected within the Altyn-Emel National Park in Kazakhstan. It is conserved ex situ and is noted from the living collection of the Botanical Garden, Bonn (Sys Tax 2015). It is not known whether it is conserved within any seed bank, although seed germination experiments have been undertaken (Mamut et al. 2014).
