The two sites where this rattan palm occurs contain only very small number of individuals, estimated to be fewer than 50 in total. Sunderland (2002) reported that the first specimen was collected from a 'small population'. At the second locality, along the Melange River, Couvreur et al. (2013) only observed six individuals.

Eremospatha barendii was assessed as Critically Endangered in The Red Data Book of the Flowering Plants of Cameroon (Onana and Cheek 2011). However, it does not occur in any protected areas, nor is it in ex situ conservation. Research should be undertaken to look for the species at other sites with suitable habitat, and to conserve the species in situ and ex situ.
