There is little information on the population size for this species but it is described as common on Ethiopian herbarium specimens. In Ethiopia wild Ensete ventricosum is mainly found in the south western highlands in small subpopulations of 10–200 individuals (Birmeta et al. 2004). There are also lowland populations in Ethiopia but these are reported to be scattered (S. Demissew pers. comm. 2016).

Ensete ventricosum is found over a wide geographic range so specific threats are difficult to identify. In the Flora Zambesiaca the species was described as not threatened as it is a widespread species and benefits from disturbance (Timberlake and Martins 2010). Wild plants of this species are restricted to montane forests some of which may be degraded from logging and clearance of land for agriculture, however, the species can survive in disturbed areas. In Ethiopia the montane and lowland subpopulations of this species have decreased due to agricultural expansion (S. Demissew pers. comm. 2016). In the wild the species is often found in damp areas or along streams but cultivated plants have a high tolerance of drought conditions suggesting this species could adapt well in a future changing climate. Cultivated plants are affected by bacterial wilt which can kill plants, fungal diseases and root damaging nematodes (Tsegaye and Westphal 2002) but it is unknown if these pests or diseases affect the wild population.

This species is found in many forest reserves and national parks, for example Mount Kenya National Nark, Rwenzoris National Park and Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. Plants are conserved in 45 botanic gardens (BGCI Plant Search 2015). Cultivated Abyssinian Banana genetic material is conserved at the Ethiopian Institute of Biodiversity Conservation and Research in Addis Ababa. There is also a wild seed collection from Tanzania conserved at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the Tanzania National Plant Genetic Resources Centre. However, due to the importance of this species in Ethiopia it would be beneficial if further germplasm of wild populations could be conserved ex situ.
