The taxon appears to be fairly common in most of its range. The number of individuals is not known.

Alteration of habitat by changes in water level and overgrowth by woody species through succession are likely to be direct threats to this species however the taxon seems to be resilient to disturbance as it is often found on roadside ditches and volcanic slopes. The recovery potential of the taxon is likely to be good given its creeping rhizomatous mat-forming habit. The fact that this species has become naturalized in Portugal, Italy and Spain indicates that the species can adapt to foreign environments and is able to generate self sustaining and spreading populations with no human assistance (specimen data, Global Compendium of Weed, accessed 6th of June 2008).
