This species is known from ca 60 botanical records. The taxon is a common and abundant species of wetlands and riparian habitats in Mexico and Guatemala.

Although threats to aquatic vegetation are numerous in the highlands of Mexico and Guatemala, this species is ruderal in habit and thrives on disturbed ground (e.g., collected within the city of Durango) (specimen data). Habitat loss and anthropogenic disturbance do not appear to directly threaten the survival of this species.
