Population data has been recorded for a few countries using different units (Commission of the European Communities 2009):

Italy: 17 sites
Poland: 130 individuals
Slovenia: Six recently confirmed populations
Slovakia: three confirmed localities with 50-100 individuals
Hungary: 10,000 to 20,000 individuals, rich populations in some parts of southwest Hungary
Austria: extinct in Kärnten, three locations in Steiermark

It is apparently extinct in Bulgaria and classed as Near Threatened in Hungary.

The population size is hard to determinate as the number of species strongly fluctuates depending on yearly weather conditions.

Some populations are apparently threatened by the factors which affect seasonally inundated habitats throughout the region, however overall there is no evidence that E. carniolica is threatened by extinction in Europe.

The species is listed on Annex II of the Habitats Directive. There are protection measures in place in several European countries:

Slovenia: protected and Vulnerable, Natura 2000 sites
Austria: Endangered but not protected and it is included in some ex situ collections.
Hungary: protected and Near Threatened, most populations are in Natura 2000 sites or protected areas
Bulgaria: protected and Endangered, found in a Natura 2000 site and protected site
Slovakia: protected and Endangered and two Natura 2000 sites.
