État de la populationExpert
It is locally common in some areas, but the population is decreasing overall due to over-harvesting (Victor and Dold 2004).

Description complète des menacesExpert
Dioscorea elephantipes is under threat from over-collection for the horticultural trade and for medicinal use. This threat is not perceived to be significant enough to cause sufficient a population reduction to trigger a threatened category. It is possible that the establishment of young plants is affected by overharvesting, but this is unproven. Additionally, this species is eaten and sometimes destroyed by Angora goats (Victor and Dold 2004).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
There are 68 ex situ collections of Dioscorea elephantipes (BGCI 2016). Seeds have been collected as part of the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership programme (MSBP 2016). This species has been found in protected areas and was previously assessed as Declining by SANBI (Victor and Dold 2005).
