Due to the increasing rural population of South Africa, the demand for medicinal plants is increasing and therefore so is exploitation. Sustainable harvesting is threatened by this increasing demand and the tubers of Dioscorea dregeana are sometimes illegally harvested from indigenous forests (Kulkarni et al. 2007).
