There are three ex situ collections of Dioscorea cotinifolia (BGCI 2016). Seeds have been collected as part of the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership programme (MSBP 2016). D. cotinifolia has a wide distribution and there are subpopulations occurring within protected areas. This species was previously assessed as Least Concern by SANBI (Foden and Potter 2005).
