The fynbos habitat this species is endemic to is decreasing mainly due to coastal development, agricultural and commercial forestry expansion, and alien invasive species. The long-standing presence of commercial forestry has contributed to the high number of invasive species in the area. Fynbos is particularly susceptible to the invasion of trees and large shrubs (such as Pinus, Acacia, Hakea and Eucalyptus) that shade out indigenous plants, increase water consumption and modify soil properties (Baard and Kraaii 2014).

Although Dioscorea burchellii is found in the Garden Route National Park, anthropogenic and ecological disturbances have resulted in this protected area possessing the second highest invasive species richness out of South African National Parks, and fynbos is the most threatened natural habitat from these invasive species (Baard and Kraaii 2014). This species was previously assessed as Least Concern by SANBI (Foden and Potter 2005). There are no ex situ collections of this species and ex situ conservation is recommended (BGCI 2017).
