Dioscorea buckleyana is exploited across Northern Madagascar so decline in the number of mature plants is likely. Fire disturbance has been reported and observed at Montagne des Français and Diana, Ambilobe, km 116 on RN6/21 km from Ambilobe.

Currently there are no specific conservation measures in place and there are no known ex situ collections (BGCI 2016). However, Dioscorea buckleyana has been found growing in several protected areas: Réserve spéciale d’Ankarana, Réserve spéciale d’Analamera, and Montagne des Français Reserve (Wilkin et al. 2009).
