The population distribution, size and trend for this species remains largely unknown (S.M. Omosowon pers. comm. 2019). One of the available records refers that "only 48 samples were left at Chumphon after flood in 1983" (Bioversity International 2019).

No known threats have been reported. However, it is thought that it may be threatened by habitat loss through deforestation or expanding human settlements and associated agriculture (S.M. Omosowon pers. comm. 2019).

The genus Dioscorea is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture as part of the yam gene pool (FAO 2009). There are no accessions of wild origin reported by Genesys (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). When overlaying the species' occurrence data with the existing network of protected areas (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2019), at least three known subpopulations occur within three different protected areas (Angkor Wat protected landscape and Ta Moa protected forest in Cambodia, and Bin Chau-Phuoc Buu nature reserve in Viet Nam). The presence of the species within these areas requires field confirmation but if they do occur within them, they are unlikely to be actively conserved as they are not monitored. Nevertheless, management plans could probably be designed to actively protect this species in these areas. Further research on the population distribution, size and trend for this species is needed (S.M. Omosowon pers. comm. 2019), as well as on threats and collecting for ex situ conservation.
