État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
No population estimates are available. However, the people in the Menabe region informally report that Dioscorea bako is rare and that the number of plants has reduced markedly in recent years through a high level of wild harvesting of tubers (Rajaonah 2004, Wilkin et al. 2008).

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Dioscorea bako is one of the favoured yams of the people of the Morondava region and an important local food source for the people of the Menabe region which has led to an apparent population decline through over-harvesting of tubers (Rajaonah 2004, Wilkin et al. 2008). Habitat loss also represents a further threat to this species (Wilkin et al. 2008).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
Currently there are no specific conservation measures in place and there are no known ex situ collections (BGCI 2016). However, subpopulations occur in protected areas including Bemaraha National Park, Reserve Speciale d'Andranomena and the contiguous protected area at Kirindy; such areas could provide a sanctuary for the species to ensure its survival (Wilkin et al. 2008). Wilkin et al. (2008) suggests that a detailed study of the autecology of Dioscorea bako would provide key information to establish sustainable levels of harvesting in future.
