État de la populationExpert

No population estimates of mature individuals are available. However, studies by Jeannoda et al. (2007) in the Brickaville region, Toamasina, found plants growing in high densities of up to 680 stems per hectare. This magnitude of abundance is in agreement with observations by others and it is thought that Dioscorea arcuatinervis is common throughout its range subject to suitable habitat.

Description complète des menacesExpert

As Dioscorea arcuatinervis has been found to occur in abundance where suitable habitat is available, the primary threat presented to this species is the loss of forest habitat, especially littoral forest which has seen very high rates of destruction (Consiglio et al. 2006). This may be through small scale logging or deforestation to accommodate expanding settlements and associated agriculture.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

Currently there are no conservation measures in place. Parts of the species range overlaps with protected areas especially Makira Forest Protected Area and Masoala National Park, as well as Andasibe, Vohimana, Moramanga and Corridor Ankeniheny Zahamena. However, the (apparent) core of the population, a strip of coastline extending 200 km south from Toamasina, Toamasina province, does not include any areas receiving formal protection. There is one known ex situ collection (BGCI 2016) and further collections are recommended.
