État de la populationExpert

Dioscorea alatipes is only found around the Toliara area where suitable habitat is present, however there are no population estimates available for this species. However, the current population trend, number of mature individuals and number of subpopulations are inferred to be decreasing due to habitat loss and over harvesting of tubers from the wild.

Description complète des menacesExpert

Many of the sites where Dioscorea alatipes has been found are in areas without formal protection. This presents risks in the form of expansion of agricultural land, although limestone soils are poor for farming; and expansion of settlements. Over-extraction of tubers also presents a threat to populations (Andriamparany et al. 2014).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

At least one population lies within the Onilahy protected area but is not actively managed. Dioscorea alatipes also occurs in Tsimanampetsotsa National Park where it is found in the wild (Andriamparany et al. 2014) and is also cultivated as part SuLaMa project (H. V. Andriamparany pers. comm. 2015). No ex situ collections are listed on GeneSys and ex situ conservation is recommended.
