No precise population data are available. Some initial estimates put numbers at between 200 and 250 mature individuals in the wild, mostly at one location, but later estimates indicate several hundred plants in at least two subpopulations at Michoacanand Guerrero. There is an extensive area between these locations that has not been surveyed.

Dioon stevensonii is threatened by illegal collecting for commercial purposes. Deforestation and goat grazing that affect regeneration have both impacted on this species.
