This species occurs in at least three locations and it is estimated that there are about 5,000 plants in the wild. Other estimates suggest that there are 25,000 plants in the wild. (Haynes 2012).

This species is affected by severe habitat destruction as a result of farming, ranching, limestone extraction and creation of reservoirs. There has also been severe over-collection in the past.
