The subpopulations of Dioon mejiae have been conservatively estimated to total more than 650,000 adult plants. This includes three subpopulations containing more than 100,000 plants each.

Even though Dioon mejiae may be one of the most abundant cycads in the New World, many populations have been seriously degraded and the number of adult plants has diminished by ca. 50% since 1950. This species' biggest threat comes from habitat destruction as a result of the conversion of habitat to farmland and to a lesser extent the effects of logging and road-building on the habitat. In addition in some areas it is used extensively during times of maize scarcity.
