Plants are now known from seven locations and subpopulations totalling >10,000 mature plants. Although there have been reductions, these are difficult to quantify and the species is considered to be stable.

These plants are affected by habitat destruction due to agriculture (for growing corn, pastures), road building and logging activities. Plants are also collected for ornamental purposes.

This species is listed in Appendix II of CITES. Plants are protected by local communities but no subpopulations are protected in Biosphere Reserves.
