This species is known from many localities, with many thousands of adult plants. Some populations have declined substantially, but the overall decline is relatively low. A few of the subpopulations were visited between 1998 and 2005 and a total of 141,500 plants were recorded. There has been a decline over the past 50 years, which in some subpopulations is estimated as >50% but overall is estimated to be <30%.

This species has been affected by agriculture driven habitat destruction and over-collecting for ornamental purposes.

This species is listed in Appendix II of CITES. It is protected by local communities and also occurs in the Sierra Gorda Biodiversity Reserve (Querétaro) and the Sierra del Abra-Tanchipa Biodiversity Reserve (San Luis Potosi). An education and awareness programme as well as the monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species
