This species is known from five locations. Data for two subpopulations indicate a decline of ca. 50% over the past two generations but the data suggests that decline has slowed over the past decade due to conservation intervention, with illegal harvesting having declined, and the species now occurring in a biosphere reserve with a reduction in habitat loss. There is also additional information so that where originally the population was estimated to comprise about 300 mature plants, new subpopulations have been found and total population numbers are estimated to be 2,000-2,500 mature individuals.

Although originally subject to collecting, this species has little horticultural (therefore collection) potential. The local people are protecting them and the land they are on has limited agricultural potential.

This species is listed in Appendix II of CITES. Plants are protected by local communities and all known specimens are found in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve and there is a community nursery. An education and awareness programme as well as the monitoring of populations will support the conservation of this species.
