This taxon is known from only a restricted area according to field observations undertaken by Zizka et al. (2009); the subpopulations near Antofagasta-Tocopilla are small and even near locally extinct and the subpopulations near Taltal have been recorded as depleted. But it has also been found to be locally abundant in the coastal areas of Paposos (Zizka et al. 2009). Overall, the population is estimated to be declining.

Specimens have been reported from the Pan de Azúcar National Park (Johnston 5840). This taxon was previously rated as Vulnerable (Hoffman and Flores 1989). No ex situ seed collections are known to have been made. Further research on population size and monitoring is needed to better understand the status of this species.
