Although some of the known occurrences are from areas with extensive land conversion, the majority of records of this species were collected from remote, mountainous regions of high altitude (Google Earth 2023). As this species grows on rocky walls, mountain ridges and other difficult to access places, it is possible that it is under-collected.

The species was collected from the Iñao Natural Integrated Management Area and National Park, in the department of Chuquisaca (WDPA 2020). The seeds of this species are not currently held by any seed bank (Genesys 2023), there are however six ex situ collections worldwide (BGCI 2023).
