Deforestation is the most likely threat to this species. Other threats to the habitats in which this species occurs may include: construction of a large dam (Stattersfield et al. 1998), agricultural activities and nickel exploitation (Johns 1993).

This species is present in Kamiali Wildlife Management Area (Morobe). This palm is not listed on CITES and seeds from this species are not present in the Millennium Seed Bank, UK. It is cultivated in the Lae Botanic Garden. In a previous conservation assessment it was listed as Data Deficient (Heatubun et al. 2009).
