This species appears to be separated into two subpopulations in the west of Papua: one in Timika and the other larger subpopulation in Nabire. Numbers of individuals in each subpopulation are not known.

The lowland forests in which this species occurs are threatened by habitat loss. Resettlement of Nabire town after an earthquake and the ongoing activities of the PT. Freeport mine in Timika are likely to affect individuals of this species (Heatubun 2009).

This species is not present in any protected areas, is not listed on CITES and seeds from this species are not present in the Millennium Seed Bank, UK. It has previously been cultivated at Bogor Botanic Garden, and may be present in cultivation elsewhere. In a recent conservation assessment it was listed as Near Threatened (Heatubun 2009).
