This species is exclusively found in habitat along rivers: a habitat which is suitable for dam construction. These hydroelectric power plants are a solution to the energy shortage of the African continent. Therefore, several dams have been built in the West African region since the 1950s, and many more are underway. Dam construction poses a significant threat to this species both upstream and downstream. Cyperus cataractarum is not able to survive in dams or rivers with changed water regimes. Small and large scale logging along rivers and streams are also a threat to the habitat of this species.
