État de la populationExpert

No quantitative population data are available for this species. In herbaria, it is known only from the type specimen, collected in 1984. It may be under-recorded given that Cyperus species are often under-collected, but the fact that it is known from only a single collection indicates that it is scarce and highly localised. The current population trend is unknown.

Description complète des menacesExpert
This species is threatened by habitat loss at its single known location. The swampy areas near Bedelle have now been extensively drained for cultivation including maize and there are very few natural swamps remaining. There has been a huge expansion of agriculture and settlement in the Bedelle area (Sebsebe Demissew pers. obs., Sileshi Nemomissa pers. obs.). Many swampy areas have been impacted in a similar way across the Ethiopian Highlands.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

No specific conservation measures or management plan are in place for this species. It is not known to occur in any protected areas or in any ex situ plant collections (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2020, BGCI 2020). Rediscovery, protection and monitoring of this species are urgently needed given that it is known only from a single herbarium collection to date.
