Cyperus berroi

In the region, natural communities have been heavily altered by agriculture and cattle ranching and only small patches of intact habitats remain. Both the Uruguayan savanna and Parana flooded savanna ecoregions are considered to be endangered. Threats to plant species in the region include overgrazing, deforestation, introduction of invasive exotic species, agriculture and artificial pasture development, harmful agricultural practices, urban expansion, mining, poorly managed tourism and soil erosion. Aquatic plant species are threatened by increasing eutrophication, pollution from pesticide run off and building of dams and dykes. The resilience of the taxon to these disturbances is unknown. There is no published information on the biology and ecology of the taxon. However, it is found in areas of medium to high human foot print, in a wide range of habitats which may indicate that it has some tolerance of anthropogenic disturbances.

Herbarium records for this species appear to have been collected in areas which are mostly unprotected. It does not benefit from legal protection in Argentina or Uruguay. Parks and reserves are few in the region. Measures to preserve what remains of the native flora are currently being developed. However, it is reported to occur in the Ramsar site "Eastern Wetlands" of Uruguay (Ramsar 2001) and Lagoa do Peixe National Park in Brazil.. It is recommended that seeds are stored as part of ex situ conservation measures.
