Cypella boliviana

In Bolivia, the cerrado is subject to a variety of threats, including clearance, invasive species, drainage, isolation, mining, urbanisation, and fire (Mamani et al 2010).  This species occurs within the protected area A.N.M.I. San Matías (San Matias Integrated Management Natural Area), and fortunately these threats are currently very light. There is a threat that the habitat where this species has been recorded could be reduced with improvement works of the road and extraction of sand or rock from the area (Mamani et al. 2010). The area around Rincón del Tigre has very few inhabitants and there are few threats from the community, if the traditional management is maintained in the area (Mamani et al. 2010). However to the south of this location there are a considerable number of communities and livestock properties (M. Martinez Pers. Obs. 2019). If these continue to develop further north along the road from Carmen Rivero Tórrez to Rincón del Tigre, then they may encroach into the location where this species grows.

This species grows within the protected area A.N.M.I. San Matías (San Matias Integrated Management Natural Area). However, in the southern zone, not far south of where this species occurs, the number and size of communities is increasing. The subsequent increase in land clearance graziing of livestock threatens the quality of the habitat and may eventually have an impact on this species. (M. Martinez Pers. Obs. 2019). The plant would be relatively easy to conserve ex situ as it grows from a bulb, but this would be recommended only after confirming the reduced population size (Mamani et al. 2010). It is recommended that the park rangers based within the A.N.M.I. are encouraged to inform the community of the importance of the area for biodiversity, keeping a monitoring of the activities including logging, grazing and construction of houses (Mamani et al. 2010).
