It is estimated that there are 4,000-5,000 plants in the wild. Additional subpopulations have been found but they are often widely separated and not regenerating (A. Lindstrom pers. comm.).

Cycas vespertilio is threatened by deforestation on Negros Oriental, Panay (Iloilo) and Southern Leyte islands and very little habitat is left (Lindstrom et al. 2008). Additionally, natural events such as typhoons are also posing an additional threat.
