Cycas taitungensis occurs at two locations. Genetic studies show low levels of differentiation between these subpopulations. At least 1,700 plants occur in the Taitung Hongyeh Village Cycas Nature Reserve. It is estimated that there are in excess of 10,000 plants in the wild.

The invasive Cycas Aulacaspis scale is present in the Taitung Hungyeh Village Cycas Nature Reserve. Poaching of plants and seed from habitat plants also poses a threat to this species. Additionally, the habitat is subjected to periodic fires.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Plants are protected in the Taitung Hongyeh Village Cycas Nature Reserve and the Coastel Range Taitung Cycas reserve. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
