This species is locally abundant and occurs across a wide area. The population is considered to be decreasing mainly due to collecting for the ornamental plant trade but the extent of decline is not known.

Cycas sexseminifera is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Subpopulations are found in the Cuc Phuong National Park in Viet Nam and in the Daming Mountain National Nature Reserve in China. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
