The overall population size of Cycas segmentifida was estimated in previous Red List Assessments to number about 10,000 mature individuals and more recent studies have estimated 17 subpopulations (Zheng et al. 2017). Population numbers had declined in many sites due to habitat loss and an increase in mud slides which covered several known subpopulations (Zheng et al. 2017). However, field surveys conducted in Yunnan, China, revealed a new subpopulation with >2,000 individuals and a healthy population structure.

Deforestation is a threat to the existence of this species. The destruction of its habitat for planting commercial or medicinal crops and massive illegal collection of this species for trading or for ornamental purposes has led to a sharp reduction of its population size. Mud slides may also be an issue.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Plants are found in the County Reserve for cycads in Wangmo, the Cenwanglaoshan Nature Reserve, the Yachang Orchids Nature Reserve and the Provincial Reserve of Dahongbao. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
