This species is sporadic but widespread and, in places, it is sometimes locally abundant.

This species may be threatened as a result of almost annual fires. Studies of other species of Cycas have shown that frequent fires or fires of greater intensity can kill seeds and young seedlings leading to lower recruitment.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Subpopulations are found in the Wasur National Park in Indonesia and in the Tonda Wildlife Management Area in Papua New Guinea. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
