Much of the habitat is under threat of clear cutting, and plants are being collected for sale as food, medicine and ornamentals, even within the reserves. There is also a large mining operation in the distribution area.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Two nature reserves have been designated for the protection of this species. One of these is known as the Panzhihua Cycad Nature Reserve. Plants are also found in the Jiaozi Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve, the Provincial Reserve in Luquan and the City Reserve in Yuanmo. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
