Population estimates range from 2,500 to 10,000 mature individuals. Although still regarded as relatively abundant compared to many other cycad species, there has been a continuing decline of mature individuals and habitat. Much of the original woodland habitat has been cut down for fuel and there has been large scale removal of plants for horticultural and local trade purposes, such that the ongoing decline in the population of the species would exceed 80% over a period of 30 years, which is less than three generations, but further extrapolation is difficult and this is treated as a minimum rate of decline. This has left only small remnant clusters of plants.
