The overall population size has not been determined but Singh et al. (2015) inferred an overall population size of  < 2,500 mature plants in the wild. Subsequent monitoring of specific subpopulations in 2017 showed rapid and substantial declines due to the removal of individual plants and only a few remnant individuals could be found. Reduction in these subpopulations exceeded 80%.

The subpopulations in the region are under anthropogenic threat primarily due to clearing and transformation of the uphill forests into cultivatable land and secondly due to the prevalent practice of harvesting of leaves and shoot apexes for religious and cultural activities and the removal of fertilized ovules or seeds prior to their shedding by the local people residing in the vicinity of the natural populations. Male cones are also harvested and used as a pesticide.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Subpopulations are found in the Satkosia Tiger Reserve and the Similipal Tiger Reserve. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
