There are 16 subpopulations of Cycas ophiolitica in the wild with an estimated c. 365,000 mature plants. The area in which these plants occur has experienced various levels of habitat transformation, ranging from <30% in core areas of its distribution to 50-80% in boundary areas. Most of the habitat transformation and fragmentation occurred prior to 2000 although there has been an increase in some areas since 2017 (Queensland Government reports, see Queensland Government Species Profile 2023).

Many smaller subpopulations are poorly conserved, including the northern ‘bluish' forms which are under significant risk from illegal collecting. Many populations of Cycas ophiolitica have been cleared on cattle ranches. Fires probably kill any small seedlings or seeds that are either on the plant or locally dispersed.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Subpopulations occur in several conservation areas. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
