This is a widely scattered species, not forming dense stands. Fairly large sub-populations occur within the limestone Vang Vieng massif in Laos. The overall population size has not been determined. The population is assessed as declining due to extensive clearing of habitat for agriculture with past decline exceeding 30% over the past 50 years (one generation is c. 30 years) and ongoing decline estimated to be between 30 and 50%, when including the next two generations.

This species has suffered extensive habitat destruction due to agriculture, which is still ongoing. As with some species within this genus, it is also susceptible to over collecting for ornamental purposes.
