The invasion of alien grasses and an increase in fire intensity due to increases in fuel load is likely to have a negative impact on this species in the future. The expansion of rural development and agriculture could also have a negative effect on subpopulations.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Subpopulations are found in parks and reserves in the Northern Territory. Many of the subpopulations are on aboriginal land and conservation issues on such land are yet to be fully addressed. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
