The actual population numbers have not been determined but Cycas indica is regarded as common in some areas where there are extensive subpopulations (Lindström and Hill 2007). Nevertheless, there has been a reduction in population numbers over the past 30 years due to habitat loss and the collection of plant parts. The extent of decline is estimated as 20-30% over the past 30 years. Further extrapolation is difficult and this is treated as a minimum decline.

Subpopulations have been reduced by local people as a result of leaf collecting and cone and seed collection for medicinal and cultural purposes. The subpopulations have also become highly fragmented due to agricultural cultivation and clearing for cattle farming.

Cycas indica is listed in CITES Appendix II. Identification of suitable sites for the formal protection of this species is needed. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
