État de la populationExpert
The population is small. During surveys conducted in 2019, about 1,100 individuals were found in the two subpopulations (X. Feng. pers com; Xi et al. 2022). The population is estimated to have declined by ca. 50% between 1991 and 2001 (Guan et al. 2018) and is considered to have reduced significantly again over the past decade resulting in an overall decline of between 80% and 85%. However,  monitoring and protection by the Gejiu Management Institute of the Daweishan National Nature Reserve, has stabilised the subpopulation there and artificial pollination has resulted in successful seed set and seedling recruitment in this subpopulation.

Description complète des menacesExpert
The primary threat to Cycas hongheensis has been intensive harvesting for sale as ornamentals, killing many plants and blocking reproduction in survivors. Some subpopulations have started to recover and seed set and seedling recruitment is now evident. At least two subpopulations are now within a protected area and are monitored (X. Feng and A. Lindström pers. comm.).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
This species is listed in Appendix II of  CITES. At least two subpopulations are protected in the 430 kmDaweishan National Nature Reserve, where monitoring and protection by the Gejiu Management Institute has stabilised the population and artificial pollination is supporting seedling recruitment (X. Feng pers com). Further monitoring, together with collection of seeds for propagation and the reintroduction into habitat have been identified as further priority actions (Xi et al. 2022).
