Cycas fugax is a very rare and restricted species that is known only from a severely threatened habitat. It was estimated to comprise between 250 and 2,000 plants in 2003 (Hill et al 2003) but there has been ongoing habitat loss and degradation and there are no recent estimates of population numbers.

Almost all of the forest habitat on this particular substrate has been cleared for tea, eucalypt and Acacia plantations. The species has also been impacted by urban expansion, and as with many species within this genus, it may be collected for ornamental purposes.
