The population comprises several subpopulations, including several large subpopulations in remote areas. There is some evidence of decline in subpopulations in China but the extent of decline across the entire range is regarded as limited.

Cycas ferruginea has experienced moderate declines in China due to habitat degradation from mining (Xi et al. 2022).

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. This species is protected in the Huu Lien Nature Reserve in northern Viet Nam. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species. The national status in China has been assessed as VU due to a decline in habitat quality and fewer than 10 locations in China.
