Recent information on population numbers indicates that subpopulations at most of the localities comprise low numbers of plants (X. Feng pers. com). Zheng et al. (2017) reported fewer than 2,000 individuals and field surveys indicate that the largest subpopulations comprise 1,000, 459 and 330 mature individuals (X. Feng pers. com). The population is therefore estimated to be between 2,000 and 2,500 mature plants. The rate of decline in the population is suspected to be >30% over three generations based on changes in landcover in the area and observations of wild subpopulations.

Many subpopulations are threatened by habitat loss and degradation where the habitat is often fragmented and disturbed by human activities such as ploughing and grazing. As with other species within this genus, Cycas diannanensis is also susceptible to over collecting for ornamental purposes.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species. Cycas diannanensis was assessed as CR B1b(iii,v)c(i,ii,iv) for the plant Red List for China (Qin et al. 2017) but the latest information indicates that the EOO exceeds the threshold for CR and the plants occur at more than one location.
