It was originally regarded as locally frequent, although not occurring in large or dense subpopulations. However when locations were visited in 2018, only a few remnant plants could be located. In addition, the most healthy plants represent a natural hybrid swarm with Cycas dolichophylla.

The habitat for Cycas collina has been continually reducing due to land clearing in its habitat for agricultural purposes (maize and rubber). However, habitat loss accelerated from 2015 when most of the habitat was destroyed due to road work and infrastructure. Only remnant plants were found in 2018, and the most healthy plants represent a natural hybrid swarm with Cycas dolichophylla.
