This is an abundant and widespread species. The actual population numbers have not been estimated, but the number in the Viet Nam subpopulation is ca. 7,000 mature individuals so overall numbers will be more than 20,000. It is widespread both inside and outside protected areas.

The species is collected for ornamental purposes. It is especially evident in what was previously known as subspecies Cycas clivicola subsp. lutea where a reduction of up to 50% of the mature plants in the wild had been noted in the past.
