The total population size of Cycas chenii was estimated at fewer than 500 individuals across its geographic distribution (Yang et al. 2016), with all the known subpopulations of the species comprising less than 100 mature plants and none that fall into any protected areas. However, several additional healthy subpopulations have been discovered that are not under threat (A. Lindström pers. comm. 2017).

There is no protected area covering or adjacent to the known populations of Cycas chenii. Long-term monitoring of subpopulations and identification of suitable areas for formal protection will support the conservation of this species.
