It is estimated that approximately 2,000 plants exist in the wild in a few subpopulations. The natural habitat is not good agricultural land. Five subpopulations where surveyed in November 2018 by A. Lindström. The type locality is extinct but the other subpopulations are still extant and thriving. Good ex situ material from all known subpopulations are grown and propagated Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden.

Some subpopulations of Cycas changjiangensis are severely degraded and numbers have dwindled. Subpopulations have been affected by habitat destruction that is due mainly to construction. Plants are also still being removed from the wild. The other main threat is mining and it is an ongoing threat to the surviving populations.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Plants occur in the Bawangling Nature Reserve. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
